Bread can satisfy hunger, but Jesus comes to satisfy us for life.
John 6:35 – Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
John 6:22-59 tells us how Jesus is the “Bread of Life.” God often uses bread to teach lessons in scripture. It is a picture of the sustaining power of God. There was a table of bread in the tabernacle and later, in the temple. God gave manna to sustain his people in the wilderness and on two occasions, Jesus multiplied the bread to feed the people.
Just like the manna during the Exodus, Jesus was given by the Father, in order to grant and sustain life. However, unlike the manna, which only temporarily satisfied the hunger of the Israelites; those who partake of Christ will never be hungry again because the life He grants and sustains is eternal life (v. 35, 40, 47, 54). Jesus said that we should think of him as the bread. As often as we eat, we should think of Him. Take and eat! God is good.
