Breaking Family Sin Patterns | Week 3 | Soul Care

Generational Curse – the idea that God or some spiritual power, punishes or afflicts a family from generation to generation, even if you’re a believer.

The curse of sin and death is broken for the believer. (Galatians 3:13 NASB ~13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—)

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in faithfulness and truth; who keeps faithfulness for thousands, who forgives wrongdoing, violation of His Law, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, inflicting the punishment of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” ~ Exodus 34:6-7 NASB

“You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, inflicting the punishment of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. ~ Exodus 20:4-6 NASB

I acknowledged my sin to You, And I did not hide my guilt; I said, “I will confess my wrongdoings to the Lord”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah ~ Psalm 32:5 NASB

There are ways that the sins of parents can cause negative consequences for future generations. However, that’s different from saying God will hold children accountable for their parents’ sin.

Behold, I was brought forth in guilt, And in sin my mother conceived me. ~ Psalm 51:5 NASB

Abraham’s Family Sin Pattern

  • Abraham’s Deception:
    • 13 Please say that you are my sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.” ~ Genesis 12:13 NASB
    • And Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent men and took Sarah. ~ Genesis 20:2 NASB
  • Isaac’s Deception:
    • When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.” ~ Genesis 26:7 NASB
    • 12 Now Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundred times as much. And the Lord blessed him, ~ Genesis 26:12 NASB
  • Jacob’s Deception:
    • 12 Perhaps my father will touch me, then I will be like a [a]deceiver in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” ~ Genesis 27:12 NASB
  • Laban’s Deception:
    • 25 So it came about in the morning that, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, “What is this that you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you deceived me?” ~ Genesis 29:25 NASB
  • Jacob’s Retaliation Deception:
    • 20 And Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. ~ Genesis 31:20 NASB
  • Sons of Jacob Deception:
    • 13 But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. ~ Genesis 34:13 NASB
    • 31 So they took Joseph’s tunic, and slaughtered a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood; ~ Genesis 37:31 NASB

When kingdom culture clashes with our family culture we have to choose kingdom culture.

  1. Don’t compromise (Genesis 39:7-8 NASB ~And it came about after these events that his master’s wife had her eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Sleep with me.” But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put me in charge of all that he owns.)
    • Someone else’s grey area might need to be your danger zone.
    • Deal severely with your sin patterns (Mathew 5:27-30 NASB ~27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 Now if your right eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.)
  2. Be marked by His presence (Genesis 41:15-16 NASB ~15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; and I have heard it said about you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It has nothing to do with me; God will give Pharaoh an answer for his own good.”)
  3. Admit Family Sin Patterns (Genesis 45:4 NASB ~Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come closer to me.” And they came closer. And he said, “I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold to Egypt.)
  4. Walk in Forgiveness (Genesis 45:5 NASB ~Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me ahead of you to save lives.)
