Chosen for Greatness | Week 5 | Chosen Series
Everyone is in One of Three Stages
- Belonging: Welcomed into relationship with Jesus and His people.
- Believing: Trusting Jesus as Savior and walking in faith.
- Becoming: Growing into the person God created you to be, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
We are called not just to belong or believe but to become effective and faithful stewards of the assignment Jesus has given us.
Believing – Faith for Greater Works
12 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. ~ John 14:12 NASB 19985
- Greater Works Are Not Limited to the Apostles
- The Greatest Miracle Jesus ever performed was the miracle of salvation.
- The Spirit Multiplied Through Us (24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. ~ John 12:24-26 NASB)
The “greater works” are possible because the Spirit of Jesus is now in every believer, empowering us to carry His mission forward.
Belonging – Confidence in Prayer
13 Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. ~ John 14:13-14 NASB 1995
- Prayer Aligned with God’s Will
- God’s Timing and Delayed Answers (9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. ~ Romans 1:9-15 NASB 1995)
When you don’t know God’s desires, don’t let fear keep you from asking—let trust give you confidence in His perfect answer.
Becoming – Obedience as an Act of Love
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. ~ John 14:15 NASB 1995
- The Commandment vs. The Law
- Obedience Flows from Love, Not Obligation (12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. ~ Romans 7:12 NASB 1995)
Obedience is not about earning God’s love but expressing our love for Him.
The Helper – Empowered by the Holy Spirit
16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. ~ John 14:16-17 NASB 1995
- The Holy Spirit: Our Guide and Helper
- The Bible as the Blueprint, the Spirit as the Guide
The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Bible—He aligns your steps with God’s blueprint.
Staying Awake: The Thief in the Night
- Key Historical Context
- Key Scriptures
- 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:2 NASB 1995
- 15 “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.” ~ Revelation 16:15 NASB 1995
