TAMPA CAMPUS & ONLINE NOTES – ARE WE WILLING
Text Book Version: Divine healing is the supernatural enablements given to a believer to minister various kinds of healing and restoration to individuals through the power of the Holy Spirit.
My Version: Now let me tell you what divine healing is… it’s you’re faith stepping into the unknown but fully confident in the Holy Spirit that abides in you for an entrusted moment by God to his sons and daughters. So that you and i can see the manifestations of the power of God here on earth or in the natural.
Gods supernatural is Always natural to Him.
40 And a man with leprosy *came to Jesus, imploring Him and kneeling down, and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, and *said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. ~ Mark 1:40-42 NASB
ARE WE WILLING?!
7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high, He led captive the captives, And He gave gifts to people.” 9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) ~ Ephesians 4:7-10 NASB
Jesus had to leave so that He could fulfill All things. So that then we could fulfill All things He has for us! He’s such a good Father that He wanted to see us fulfill our destiny.
7 But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. ~ John 16:7 NASB
11 And He gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature [d]which belongs to the fullness of Christ. ~ Ephesians 4:11-13 NASB
Now let me share the gifts that we get to operate in to bring divine healing…
- 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. ~ 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NASB
Randy Clark says in his book… Power of Healing
That there is a stewardship you have with the presence and person of The Holy Spirit.
He says that God Himself dwells with in us and delivers His message to the world using miracles, sings, and wonders. Because this is the gospel Kingdom we are to proclaim.
61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, ~ Isaiah 61:1-2 NASB 1995
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” ~ Luke 4:18-19 NASB 1995
2 When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. 3 And they *came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. 4 Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. 5 And Jesus seeing their faith *said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” ~ Mark 2:1-5 NASB 1995
PLANT CITY NOTES – THE POWER, COMPASSION, AND COST OF HEALING MINISTRY
Jesus’ ministry included miraculous healings and deep suffering. As His disciples, we carry on His work with both His power and His compassion.
4 However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore, And our pains that He carried; Yet we ourselves assumed that He had been afflicted, Struck down by God, and humiliated. 5 But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; The punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him, And by His wounds we are healed. ~ Isaiah 53:4-5 NASB
7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.~ Matthew 10:7–8 NASB
The Biblical Foundation for Healing
- Healing is in the Atonement
- The same sacrifice that secures our salvation also provides for physical and emotional healing.
- 24 and He Himself brought our sins in His body up on the cross, so that we might die to [c]sin and live for righteousness; by His wounds you were healed. ~ 1 Peter 2:24 NASB
- 16 Now when evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. 17 This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled: “He Himself took our illnesses and carried away our diseases.” ~ Matthew 8:16-17 NASB
- Jesus’ Model of Ministry
- If we’re to walk as Jesus did, we must include healing as part of the gospel ministry.
- 23 Jesus was going about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. ~ Matthew 4:23 NASB
- Healing as Part of the Full Gospel
- Proclaiming Christ should also display His power. Healing ministry is integral, not optional.
- 20 For the kingdom of God is not in words, but in power. ~ 1 Corinthians 4:20 NASB
Receiving and Releasing God’s Power
- Holy Spirit Empowerment
- Every believer can receive the Holy Spirit’s anointing to minister healing.
- 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.” ~ Acts 1:8 NASB
- Abiding and Intimacy
- Fruitfulness in ministry, including healing, flows out of an intimate relationship with Jesus.
- 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.~ John 15:5 NASB
- Compassion and Power
- Compassion moves us to pray for the suffering; the Holy Spirit’s power enables the miracle
- 14 When He came ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. ~ Matthew 14:14 NASB
Practical Steps to Minister Healing
- A Simple Model
- Not a formula but a guide to show love, discern needs, and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
- 5-Step Method: Interview → Diagnosis/Prayer Selection → Prayer → Re-interview → Post-Prayer Suggestions.
- Testimony Fuels Faith
- Sharing healing testimonies inspires others to believe for their own breakthroughs.
- 18 And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was begging Him that he might accompany Him. 19 And He did not let him, but He *said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. ~ Mark 5:18-20 NASB
- Authority in Christ
- When we confront sickness and oppression, we do so in Jesus’ authority, not our own strength.
- 10 Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.~ Matthew 10:1 NASB
Navigating Defeat and Suffering
- Honest Acknowledgment of Unanswered Prayers
- Not everyone is healed in every situation; sometimes we must say, “I don’t know.”
- Carrying the Cross
- Jesus calls us to take up our cross daily, which can include the heartbreak of seeing some remain unhealed.
- 23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.~ Luke 9:23 NASB
- Experience vs. Scripture
- Don’t base your theology solely on personal experience. God’s Word remains true regardless of outcomes.
- Embracing Emotional Pain
- We reflect God’s heart by being willing to “hear the cry” and to respond.
- 7 And the Lord said, “I have certainly seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their outcry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. ~ Exodus 3:7–8 NASB
Encouragement and Charge
- Don’t Quit
- Press on and keep praying. Each prayer is another chance for someone to experience God’s supernatural love.
- Pray for Both Power and Compassion
- “Father, keep me humble, give me Your compassion, and grant me Your power to minister healing.”
- Practical Activation
- Invite people to receive prayer for boldness to continue or begin praying for the sick.
- Encourage testimonies of healing, whether large or small.
SOUTHSHORE NOTES – DIVINE HEALING
Why do we pray for Divine Healing?
- God commands us in the Bible to pray for healing.
- Healing is a demonstration of the present and future reality of God’s kingdom.
- Jesus made provision for healing.
The first account of divine healing is near the beginning of the Bible.
- 17 Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maids, so that they bore children. 18 For the Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. ~ Genesis 20:17-18 NASB 1995
Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals.
- 26 And He said, “If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer.” ~ Exodus 15:26 NASB 1995
- 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; 3 Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; ~ Psalm 103:2-3 NASB 1995
Divine healing is deeply rooted in the Old Testament!
- Moses prayed and Miriam is healed from leprosy after 7 days. (Numbers 12:13-15)
- Moses prayed and the Israelites are healed from venomous snakes. (Numbers 21:4-9)
- Naaman is healed from leprosy through Elijah. (2 Kings 5:1-14)
- Hezekiah’s life is extended from terminal illness through Isaiah’s word. (2 Kings 20:1-7)
- Elijah raises a widow’s son from the dead. (1 Kings 17:17-24)
- Elisha raises the Shunammite woman’s son from the dead. (2 Kings 4:18-37)
- Jeroboam’s withered hand is healed through a prophet’s prayer. (1 Kings 13:4-6)
- Sarah, Rachel and Hannah all are healed from barrenness.
Healing displays the works of God. (John 9:1-7)
Jesus commissions His disciples to ALSO pray for the sick: And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing ~ Luke 9:1-2 NASB 1995
Who can pray for the sick?
- 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” ~ Mark 16:17-18 NASB 1995
- 14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective [e]prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. ~ James 5:14-16 NASB 1995
Divine healing displays the works of God in 3 ways:
- It is a demonstration of the Kingdom of God.
- It is a confirmation of the Gospel of Jesus
- It is a gift, or manifestation, of the Holy Spirit.
Healing is a provision of the cross of Christ.
- 4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. ~ Isaiah 53:4-5 NASB 1995
The basis of our faith for physical healing is in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
God is sovereign in healing—He gets to choose the time, place and method by which He heals.
There are 3 ways God heals:
- The first is instantaneous
- The second is by a process
- The third is by promotion to glory or death.
God doesn’t always heal instantaneously.
- Paul says he first came to the Galatians because of an illness.
- Paul tells Timothy that he left Trophimus sick at Miletus.
- Paul also tells Timothy to drink some wine for his stomach illnesses.
How do we pray for Diving Healing?
- We pray in obedience by faith!
- 5 step prayer model can be a great help!
Repentance always precedes the refreshing of God’s presence.
- 19 Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; ~ Acts 3:19 NASB 1995
