The god of Money | Week 4 | gods and lords Series

We would do well to realize that there are lots of things in this world that can steal our worship and prop themselves up in our lives as counterfeit “gods and lords.” If we can identify them, we can remove them and restore our relationship with the Lord.

God desires every believer to be prosperous in every way!

God is NOT concerned about what You Have.

God IS concerned about Anything that Has You .

The Bible does not condemn money itself but The LOVE of Money, which leads to sin, idolatry, and separation from God.

  • Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. ~ 1 Timothy 6:9-10 NIV
  • 10 Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. ~ Ecclesiastes 5:10 NIV

Money itself is neutral—it is a tool. But when it becomes the object of our love, security, and trust, it competes with God for our devotion.

Jesus directly confronted the DIVIDED Heart when it comes to love for God versus love for wealth.

  • 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. ~ Matthew 6:24 NIV

Mammon operates under Satan’s larger plan to replace God in the hearts of men. Specifically, Mammon seeks to:

  • Pervert Trust – It wants people to trust in riches rather than God (Proverbs 11:28).
  • Enslave Through Greed – It fuels materialism and a never-ending hunger for more (Ecclesiastes 5:10).
  • Corrupt Stewardship – It distorts biblical principles of generosity and contentment (Luke 12:15).
  • Distract from Eternity – It blinds people to their eternal destiny by making them focus on temporary wealth (Luke 16:19-31).

The Heart Test : If money controls your thoughts, emotions, or decisions, it may have become an idol

  • 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~ Matthew 6:21 NIV

Here are five Self-Examination questions

  1. Anxiety Test: Do you feel deep anxiety or fear over financial loss or instability? (Matthew 6:25-27)
  2. Security Test: Do you feel safer because of your wealth rather than God’s promises? (Psalm 20:7)
  3. Sacrifice Test: Would you struggle to obey God if it meant financial loss? (Mark 10:21-22)
  4. Generosity Test: Does it pain you to give freely, even when God prompts you to? (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  5. Priority Test: Do you prioritize making more money over serving God and others? (Matthew 6:24)

How to Defeat Mammon in your Life

  • Recognize That Money is a Tool, not a God (Matthew 6:24)
  • Practice Radical Generosity (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  • Reject Financial Fear and Trust in God’s Provision (Philippians 4:19)
  • Live with an Eternal Perspective (Matthew 6:19-20)

How to Prosper in Every Way

  • Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! ~ 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 NIV

Enriched goes far beyond being “Rich”

Who is Your Master? Jesus gives only two choices: God or Mammon. There is no neutral ground. If we do not actively serve God with our finances, we will be ruled by Mammon.

A Prayer of Renunciation

Father, I renounce the spirit of Mammon and reject its influence over my life. I declare that You alone are my provider, and I will trust You completely. I break all agreements with financial fear, greed, and self-sufficiency. Teach me to be a good steward of what You provide and may all I have be used for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
